Brobible: There has been a lot of discussion and outrage over the past two weeks regarding trophy hunting. The controversy came when the Department of the Interior attempted to reverse an Obama-era ban and allow the importation of elephant trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia.
President Donald Trump put a hold on the department’s decision and referred to trophy hunting as a “horror show.” President Trump put the decision on ice and said he would make a final decision next week.
This sparked the debate of whether trophy hunting was moral or not. Dan Bilzerian has weighed in on the polarizing issue with a very assertive opinion on the hot-button topic. On Sunday, Bilzerian tweeted: “Shooting animals for trophy’s is for dudes with small dicks #EatWhatYouKill.”
The “King of Instagram” doesn’t hide the fact that he is a gun enthusiast and has a massive collection of firearms. But he feels very strongly against the killing of animals for sport. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has issued a statement: “President Trump and I have talked and both believe that conservation and healthy herds are critical. As a result, in manner compliant with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations the issuing of permits is being put on hold as the decision is being reviewed.”
Proponents of trophy hunting argue that the money collected goes back to the local communities of people and to the conservation of the area and its wildlife. Others argue that trophy hunting is decimating populations of animals across Africa. Another issue besides trophy hunting as to why the elephant population is deteriorating is that they are being killed because of ivory poaching and habitat destruction. Those two factors caused the deaths of 144,000 elephants in less than a decade.
Everyone from professional outdoorsman Steven Rinella to Joe Rogan has preached the virtues of hunting animals only for food.
